Steenvlinder projects in The Netherlands

In several cities and countryside areas in The Netherlands we started up selfbuild, custom build and DIY projects. The majority is self build and DIY, sometimes even combined in a single development. Like in the city of Leiden. Read more about our projects here below.

De Nijverheid, Leiden

In Leiden we found a school site where we transformed the listed school buildings into fixer upper apartments and used the rest of the old schoolyard to develop serviced plots for attached self-build.

Eigen Wiericke, Nieuwerbrug

In Nieuwerbrug, in the green heart of The Netherlands, self-build plots were developed for individual self builders. This year another 4 timber shell homes will be developed, leaving the finishing exterior and interior to the buyers.

De Meesterproef, Vlaardingen

In Vlaardingen, just below Rotterdam, 10 fixer upper apartments were developed. Small surfaces and larger family homes. Everyone was free to design their own fitout, which resulted in beautiful and unique homes.

Vrije wilg, Dordrecht

Neighbouring beautiful green wetlands and the historic city of Dordrecht, this site is a perfect location for self-build homes. Most self-builders are building at the moment and together they are creating a unique little community.

De Bovenboog, Uithoorn

Just below Amsterdam, a small school site is transformed into fixer upper apartments. Some small, some larger to suit as a family home. The school keeps its intimacy, as the new residents will share the old school yard as a communal area, for green and parking.

De Metamorfose, Rijswijk

In Rijswijk, just next to The Hague, a former office building was transformed into DIY aparments. The new residents chose their own fitout, but also had 3 types of windows to choose from to install. Planning permission was given for similar window frames, french doors or a loggia.

Wikihouse, Almere

Wikihouse is an open source project for designing and building houses. Timber frame houses. In Almere we guided several self builders to their unique wooden homes. Now we will guide 11 social rent-DIY-buy households to build their own Wiki house.

In Rotterdam North a small site is to be developed by 6 households, together. We have bought the site and will guide the group of neighbours to their design and development of their future dream homes.

In Rotterdam, South side, a complete block of early 20th century homes are to be transformed by 32 households, together. As a collective they will be guided by us to make unanimous decisions and in the meantime help focus on their own unique floor planning.

Birckhoeve, Rijswijk

On the edge of the cities of The Hague and Delft lies a beautiful, remote farmer site where the old stables have been transformed into DIY homes and a new timber frame shell building will be built in the old stable-style.

Prins Willem-Alexanderschool, 's-Gravenzande

Steenvlinder's first project is a charactaristic school building, from the 1930's in a village near Hoek van Holland, where the ferry takes off to Dover. Different size DIY apartments were developed for mostly local buyers who went to school there.

In a small village Boskoop, a former elementary school was transformed to 6 DIY apartments. Half of them were reserved for the social programme of Steenvlinder INC (inclusive), where the DIY-ers could rent, start their renovation and buy their home in several years.

Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk, Voorburg

Our first church we purchased is a former Catholic church just outside The Hague, in Voorburg. Impressive heigt and coloured glass windows. This needs thorough investigation and drawing sessions to seperate it into DIY homes. In the Winter of 2021 we will publish the possibilities.

Energiepark, Leiden

In the historic city of Leiden is a former industrial area ready to be transformed. Together with a community of residents and a leading developer in The Netherlands, we are cooperating with the City Council of Leiden to develop the area. We will include services plots, shell and DIY homes.
