And just as importantly, building their own home is in many ways better value. The end result, most often, is not about claiming a profit but claiming the satisfaction and sense of achievement that comes with living in a self-designed house. Uniquely theirs.

Meet Gaitrie and Charley, self-builders in a project of Steenvlinder just South of Rotterdam. Neighbouring beautiful green wetlands and the historic city of Dordrecht, the self-build site turned out to be the perfect spot for them to build their dream home.

Gaitrie: “ We always talked about building our own home someday, but never thought it would be a real option. When we learned about this serviced plot, we were sold! We were able to have our house built within a year, while also taking care of our parents, welcoming our first grandchild and managing work during the Covid-lockdowns. We were lucky to work together with an architect that understood our wishes, a contractor that we could communicate with and neighbours that had started just before us and were extremely helpful. We visited the site almost every day. It was stressful at times but mostly we were inspired to see that our dream became reality. Our home is in so many ways our home, that is priceless.”
